When it comes to starting something new, taking the first step is always the hardest part. And I’m not just talking about martial arts here, I’m talking about anything. I once heard someone say that “if you wait until you are motivated do something, you’ll never get anything done.” When it comes to exercising, it can feel impossible to start, especially if it isn’t already a part of your daily routine.

So then the question still stands, how do you start something when you don’t feel motivated? Nike knew what they were doing with their slogan because “Just Do It” is a way more useful mantra than it seems. Now, if you just rolled your eyes, I beg you to stick with me on this one because I learned a tool that actually works.

In a previous post I mentioned my love for the author Mel Robbins. She published a book called, “The 5 Second Rule” and when I say this book changed how I run my life, I sincerely mean that. Robbins’s points out that our brains are way more powerful than we give them credit for. All it takes is 5 seconds for our brain to talk us out of doing something. 5. Seconds. So she devised this thing called “The 5 Second Rule,” and all you have to do is count down from 5 the moment you decide to do something.

Let’s put this into practice. Let’s say you have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. When that first alarm goes off, what do you do?  Immediately reach for the snooze button, right? Now, the trick is, when you recognize that you are about to let yourself make that choice, instead of hitting snooze you say, “No, I’m getting out of bed. 5-4-3-2-1.” You might just be surprised that you actually get out of bed this time. (Believe me when I say this works.)

This applies to everything but for this blog we will relate it to making the decision to start taking better care of yourself. The next time you have the thought, “I’ll sign up for a fitness class,” or “I should start that 30-day at home ab challenge,” immediately start counting down.

And your brain will ACTUALLY LISTEN! I’ve used this trick to help me get out of bed in the morning. I’ve even used it to make a phone call that I had been putting off. In her book she even talks about how this can be used to help calm your anxiety. It’s absolutely incredible.

I can’t recommend this book enough and as someone who is dyslexic listening to the audiobook was an even better experience. Robbins reads the book herself and she adds in her own little quips. She sounds so natural and it’s almost like she is talking directly to you. It’s empowering and she has a great way of helping you realize some simple truths. All it takes is counting down from 5 and your entire day could change in an instant.

Try it out and let me know how it goes!
